Bike Travel in the SFV — Winnetka

Winnetka will always have a very special place in my heart. It’s on my commute from home to work and I rode the section between Devonshire and Plummer daily before there was a bike lane. Now there is a buffered bike lane! It’s the best. I don’t want to take credit for it, but that was basically me (thanks also to LADOT, Chatsworth Neighborhood Council, MotorMerc, and Roadblock). This last section was installed June 9, 2012.

Winnetka from Devonshire to Vanowen (←North)

Anway, Winnetka is a great route between Devonshire and the Orange Line (and thusly Pierce College). It has a fantastically comfortable section from Devonshire to Nordhoff, it connects to Chase, and then ABRUPTLY ENDS at Vanowen.

Yes, welcome back to reality. Of course this North-South has a problem. The lane ends at Vanowen and never returns. There are two, count them, two bike paths that intersect Winnetka between Vanowen and Victory (those dark greens at the far right above). Not extending the bike lane to Victory/Pierce College is the biggest boneheaded move ever. FULL STOP.

Oh well. I still ride this one block section to/from either the LA River Bike Path or the Orange Line anyway (because so close), but it isn’t very comfortable at all.
